Our Backstory.
Hey everyone, I'm Tyler.
My love for the outdoors began as a kid and flourished as a young adult.
I spent many years in Scouts on trips that shaped the person that I am today. When it was time to choose between my passion for weekend adventure or wedging my way further into the culinary scene, I chose restaurants and the rest was history.
Throughout my busy career I always found a way to escape with my wife Kassy into nature. We both shared a deep love for the outdoors and tried our best to flee the city when the opportunity would arise. I was managing a busy restaurant downtown Oakville ON and decided that it was time to move back home to my roots in Peterborough ON where I was born and raised.
Fast forward through a new job as Sous chef at a fine dining restaurant that I loved, marriage + two beautiful baby girls. The next step for us felt obvious to propel my career forward. We bought the restaurant I had been working in for five years and made it ours.
One month after renovating our dining room the world was rocked with the pandemic. We held strong, but burned ourselves out in the process. All the havoc kept taking me further and further away from my values. I was passionate about using local ingredients to tell a captivating story, but at the time it felt like I would never be able to do it on the level that I dreamed of within the walls of our restaurant space.
On a total whim looking deep for inspiration, I took a course that taught me how to storytell outdoors through my cooking and it unlocked a passion that I had stowed away many years ago that was waiting to be let back out.
Day by day I started to make decisions that brought me closer to discovering who I really am and what it is that I’m meant to do. I gave up drinking alcohol and that was the domino effect that eventually led me back into the woods.
My whole life I have always taken any opportunity to cook over the fire because it feels like home to me. I love working with natural elements and enjoying my food with the backdrop of nature.
I started taking more frequent hikes into the woods to cook lunch on my own to reflect and unwind from the stress of the restaurant industry. For once in my life, I embraced taking better care of my mental health.
My wife and I created a unique culinary experience based on this called “Lunch In The Woods” and it eventually encouraged us to think outside of the box for our future.
We found the inner courage to sell our restaurant and follow our hearts outdoors. Since then we have continued to focus on projects and products that align with getting outside.
